Connect TikTok Ads to Nevian

Time needed: about 5 minutesLast updated:

Put Nevian's parameters in your TikTok ads' destination URL, so every click and every sale shows its campaign, ad group and ad.

What you need

  • Access to the ad account in TikTok Ads Manager with permission to create or edit ads.
  • A Nevian workspace where you are the owner, an admin or a member. Viewers can't add ad platforms or tracking links.
  • The Nevian tracking script on the page your ads send people to. See Connect your website to Nevian.

Steps

  1. In Nevian, open Ad platforms and click TikTok Ads. In the Connect TikTok Ads window, choose Add tracking parameters, click Next twice and then Done. The parameters it shows are the TikTok part; the tracking link you create next puts its own btc= in front.

The Connect TikTok Ads window in Nevian on its last step, with the Done button highlighted.
  2. Open Tracking links and click New tracking link. Give it a name, choose TikTok Ads as the Ad platform, keep Direct as the tracking mode, enter your page in Landing page URL and click Create tracking link.

The New tracking link form with TikTok Ads as the ad platform, Direct tracking and a landing page URL, and the Create tracking link button highlighted.
  3. In the tracking link's Setup, step 2 Paste the URL parameters in TikTok Ads, find Full link, for a quick test: your page followed by ?btc= and TikTok's macros. Click its Copy.

The Setup of the tracking link, with the full link (page address, btc= and the TikTok macros) and its Copy button highlighted.
  4. In TikTok Ads Manager, open the ad (a new one, or edit an existing one). In Ad details, paste the full link in Destination URL, then click Edit under the Preview button.

The Ad details of a TikTok ad with the full Nevian link in Destination URL, and the Edit link under Preview highlighted.
  5. Turn off Auto-attach, so TikTok doesn't add its own UTM parameters on top of Nevian's. Under URL, open Build URL parameters to check that the parameters were detected, click Apply and publish the ad.

TikTok's URL settings with the Auto-attach switch highlighted and off, the detected UTM parameters and the btc custom parameter, and the Apply button.
  6. Back in Nevian, open Logs › Clicks after the first clicks. Each click shows the tracking link and, under it, the ad it came from.

Logs, Clicks in Nevian, with a new click showing the tracking link and the TikTok ad ID under it.

Check that it works

  • Click Preview next to the destination URL in TikTok Ads Manager: the address keeps btc= and the utm_ parameters.
  • In Logs › Clicks, click a row: UTM parameters shows the campaign, ad group and ad TikTok filled in.
  • Live view shows each visitor the moment they land, with the tracking link.

Problems

Clicks show utm_source=TikTok and utm_medium=Paid

That's Auto-attach: TikTok fills the source, medium, ID and name by itself. Open the ad, click Edit under Preview, turn Auto-attach off and paste the full link again.

Smart+ campaigns: the ad shows a creative instead

In the upgraded Smart+ campaigns TikTok has four levels, and __CID__ is the single creative (video, image or text), not the ad. The ad's ID there is __ADID_V2__. TikTok explains it in About reporting for the upgraded Smart+ experience. In other campaigns, __AID__ is the ad group and __CID__ the ad.

Campaign names with the | character

Nevian reads each value as name|id. A | inside a campaign, ad group or ad name splits it in the wrong place, so avoid that character in your names.
