Connect Shopify to Nevian

Time needed: about 10 minutesLast updated:

Send every Shopify order to Nevian with the Nevian script in your theme and a custom pixel on your checkout, so each sale shows up next to the ad that brought the buyer. No app to install.

What you need

  • Your Shopify admin login, with access to the theme code and to Settings › Customer events (the store owner has both).
  • A way to place a test order: Shopify's Test payment gateway or Shopify Payments' test mode (see Shopify's test orders guide).
  • A Nevian workspace with an active plan (Beginner, Pro or Enterprise), where you are the owner, an admin or a member. Viewers can't connect integrations.
  • The two tabs side by side: Nevian on Integrations and your Shopify admin.

Steps

  1. In Nevian, open Integrations, click Add integration (Connect provider when nothing is connected yet) and pick Shopify. In the Connect Shopify window, have the platform open in another tab, then click Next to get your tracking code.

  2. Nevian creates two pieces of code for your store. Copy the first one, Nevian script for theme.liquid, and leave this window open.

  3. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store. On your current theme, click the … button and choose Edit code.

Shopify's Online Store page with the theme's menu open and Edit code highlighted.
  4. Open theme.liquid in the layout folder (or press ⌘+P or Ctrl+P and type its name). Paste the script on its own line right before </head> and click Save.

Shopify's code editor with theme.liquid open, the Nevian script pasted right before the closing head tag and the Save button highlighted.
  5. Back in Nevian, copy the second piece, Custom pixel code.

  6. In Shopify, go to Settings › Customer events and add a custom pixel. Name it Nevian and click Add pixel.

  7. In Customer privacy, set Permission and Data sale to match your store's cookie consent. Paste the code in the Code window, click Save, then Connect pixel and confirm.

  8. Place a test order in your store. When the order's thank-you page opens, the line in Nevian turns Connected within a few seconds. Click Done.

Check that it works

  • The Shopify card in Integrations says Connected and shows the time of the last event. Both pieces of code stay on the integration's Connection tab.
  • Logs › Webhooks lists the order exactly as the pixel sent it.
  • The custom pixel can't tell a test order from a real one, so your test is recorded as a sale: open it in Logs › Conversions and click Mark as test (owners and admins).
  • For real sales, the script in your theme saves the click ID (in a cookie and on the cart), and the pixel sends it with the order, so the sale lands on the right ad.

Problems

"Waiting for the first postback…" after a test order

The pixel didn't send the order. In Settings › Customer events, open Custom pixels: if Nevian is under Disconnected pixels, click Connect. If Permission is set to Required, the pixel only runs after the buyer accepts cookies in your banner, so accept them in the browser you test with.

Some orders never arrive

The pixel runs on Shopify's own checkout. Cash on delivery apps (such as Releasit), checkouts outside Shopify and some upsell apps skip that step, so their orders don't reach the pixel. If such an app can send a postback, connect it as Custom / CRM / COD.

"no matching click" on a real sale

A test order has no click, so this is normal there. On a real sale, check that the script is in theme.liquid of the theme that is live (not a copy) and that your ads use the Nevian tracking link.
